Demystifying Shiva
Philosophy Class

Friday 16th March, 2018
6:30pm – 8:30pm

As yoga slips into the mainstream, there is an increasing focus on the physical practice, and the various dimensions of this fascinating philosophy are being left out. We’re missing the wisdom that has tremendous relevance to our daily lives, and our physical practice can be so very much more when it is grounded in the ideas that birthed these forms.  Yoga is full of delicious philosophy, mythology, provocative suggestions and perspectives, and I believe we should bring this conversation back!

Benevolent Shiva is considered to be both the Destroyer and Regenerator… as He destroys so He creates… destroying all illusion, fear and ignorance to reveal the Creation of Light and the illumination of what is real. He has enormous and bountiful Compassion, and is often considered to be the God of Benediction, blessing all those that ask for his protection.

Shiva grants ALL desires…all that we ask…without exception… and is easily pleased!!! He is considered to be the protector of the underworld and has immense compassion for even the lowest of all Beings, which is why he is one of the most revered Gods in the Hindu tradition. His attributes represent victory over negative activities and practices, and He reveals a Calmness in Human Nature. When we honour Him and surrender to him, He transforms our Greatest Darkness to Light. His presence in any room or altar reminds one of the Unlimited support of the Universe and the infinite possibilities available to us.

Although he’s the destroyer of ignorance and illusions, there has often been a mystery to the essence of Shiva which this philosophy class will aim to demystify.

Philosophy Class 1: Heroes on the Yogi’s Journey
Throughout history, for thousands of years, Yogic texts have given us shining examples of heroic life – how to succeed, how to overcome challenges, how to be the best yogi and person we can be.  Together we’ll explore the Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita and Hindu mythology to look at some of the most revered and idolised heroes, what they have to teach us, and how we can embody their most divine teachings.  This will be our introductory class where we will cover a broad view of historical heroes worth exploring.

Philosophy Class 2: Conversations with God in the Bhagavad Gita
In a love-starved world, the hidden message of love in the Bhagavad Gita is much needed.  We are all spiritual beings, entitled to rejoice in eternal love with the divine, but how can we keep that love uncontaminated by selfishness and misidentification with illusion?  The battlefield setting of the Gita calls all of us to become spiritual warriors and conquer the selfish lower self with the selfless higher self.

Group Dynamics can be extraordinarily healing, potent and powerful, and in some cases tricky, when managing a wide variety of energies.  Working with groups is both an art and a professional practice that takes time to refine, manage effectively and master to bring the greatest potential out of the group dynamic.

This workshop will be tailored specifically for those interested in working with groups and how to lead and facilitate groups of varying themes, such as:

 •    Healing or therapy groups
    •    Mentoring or supervision groups

MAHASHIVARATRI

Wednesday 14th February 2018

7pm – 10:30pm

Come celebrate The Great Night of Shiva!

We’ll ecstatically evoke, honour and embody Shiva through an evening of Chanting, Sacred Dance, Embodied Storytelling and Guided Meditations. Shiva sits in meditation AND Shiva dances!

Shiva is the Lord of Yogi’s and yogic practice. He is the Lord of Tantra. Shiva, the destroyer, can transmute any of the poisons of life into divine consciousness.

MahaShivaratri is known as the most potent time of the year to worship Shiva. A night of auspicious boons for yogis.

Worshiping Shiva invokes the experience of the vastness, the all consuming nature of space, all-pervading, omnipresent awareness, AND the lightning bolt like strike of awakening within the void, the transcendence of darkness and ignorance in ourselves and life, the sudden death and rebirth breakthroughs that are the fruit of yogic practice.

This is a community celebration of Shiva. Tickets are a $20 donation and all profits go towards charity.

Please bring fruits, treats etc to share as Prasad, and any other sacred objects you’d like to charge on the altar and take home with you. Please wear clothes you’re comfortable to perform light dance movements in.

Om Namah Shivaya!

$20 donation
(100% of profits go to Braveheart charity)
